Mindfulness of the five senses

mindfulness of the five senses

Mindfulness is all about being in the present moment. We can use our five senses – SIGHT, SOUND, TASTE, TOUCH, and SMELL to help us be more present. By noticing our bodies and surroundings we can bring ourselves into the here and now.  Try it and see what happens.

  • Take a moment to notice.
  • Where are you sitting/standing/lying right now?
  • What do you see… in front of you, behind you, to the side of you.
  • What do you hear? It might help to close your eyes.
  • What do you taste?
  • What can you feel with your hands? Can you notice air circulating around your hands, face and neck?
  • What do you smell? Again it might help to close your eyes.
  • Take a moment to rest your attention gently on the breath.  Notice all the different parts of your body moving as you breathe in and out.

We can bring our attention to the five senses at any moment. What did you notice that you hadn’t noticed before?

‘Mindfulness is about stopping and being present, that is all’?
